Marion Brown was an African-American jazz musician,
composer, writer, visual artist and ethnomusicologist. He was born September
8th, 1931 in Atlanta, Georgia (many encyclopaedias incorrectly give his birth
date as September 8, 1935). His main instrument was the alto saxophone, but he
also played soprano saxophone, clarinet, flute, wood flute, zomari, guitar,
piano, and percussion. He spent the last five years of his life at an assisted
living facility in Hollywood, Florida. He died on October 18, 2010 at the age
of 79.
"Words do not describe music the way that they describe life. Music speaks to us on a higher level than words."
